In light of HALLOWEEN (which is in 364 days!) (I didn’t have this idea till the day after Halloween and then I fell asleep making this so now it’s 2 days after hehe–11/2 works too).
I thought I’d do a post with a bunch of my art involving creeeepyy faces woo! If you make it all the way to the end you will see a piece that demonstrates a pure creative ~flow~ that I was having a really hard time tapping into this summer. A lot of times I feel like my art is just a buncha doodles (which is pretty true since I’m rly bad at finishing projects) (which is ironic because a month ago I started a post about finishing projects and never finished it hahahehehha), but when I put all my art altogether like this I feel like it speaks more! If I was a better ~organizer~ I would have been able to document all of my art with this theme but a lot of what I do just gets lost. This is some stuff I have! Enjoy!!
WHAT STARTED IT ALL?
The City of Berkeley sign! I’ve always been drawn to faces, but my creative face-scapade really started when I noticed the sign for the city of Berkeley. I was so captivated by it. I remember taking a mental note to try something like it right away.
And I did! I actually lost my sketchbook from January-March but in it was a TON of doodles that looked like this one below. Faces, faces, speech bubbles, face bubbles, faces!
This was actually the first one I did like this. Call it history if you will. 😉
I was drawing them everywhere.
AND some more doodles:
This one below demonstrates when I started to get more adventurous with how the faces were oriented. Drawing this was exhilarating because I discovered something so new!
I really like that one above and how the eyes are sound waves. Sound waves in general have developed into a huge theme in my art as well. Along with those, I eventually started adding brains to the mix! The speech bubbles remained a theme.
If you look closely at the one above there are faces and sound waves in a brain 😉 On the one below, if you look at the face with the hat on the left, you’ll see that the mouth of the top face is the eyes of the bottom face. I did this in class because I could not listen to one more word about yung Marx.
This one is complex if you really dig deep. It started with the tree looking thing in the middle which turned into a big face with empty eyes and big lips. On the forehead is a face and body. Going into the eye is a fat arrow and a shark man hehe. No idea why! From there I added a few more faces/brains (see the one under the shark man with his lips putting out O’s like the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland? I like him haha). Then in the middle you’ll see a blob of four faces all sharing a hat, connected to an eye with a string from which two stick people are hanging for dear life. The eye is part of a bigger shark man whose teeth were started to be made of faces, but then I had to go to class.
Cool huh? I feel like the value of these drawings is in all the hidden little pieces rather than the look of the whole thing itself.
Another thing I started doing was BRAIN BALLOONS! Or eye balloons. I have so many more examples but only MutherErth knows where I put all this stuff. I did this piece one morning this summer and it was the first time in a while that I got into that ~flow~.
Wow, in the one below I didn’t even realized that there were balloons inside this brain balloon until right now hahah!
Below: “Stop looking at the sun”
“I’m not! It’s looking at me!” ft. brain, eye balloons, and sun (one of my favorite themes)
A cool sumthin sumthin that I made in a comic book for my friend the yung Elias Sebti. It’s him as a professor who stole the moon and then smoked it and breathed out the campanile and a bunch of clocks to eventually see the universe. I’ll show you all one day.
This one’s messy but I was just playin around. Ft. running man sick figure (also a large theme in my art: stick figures).
This was one below was on my chalkboard from May to mid June and I was really proud of it! I love how I played with circles and color and involved a random bird face. It’s cute cause during that time I noticed my little sisters Isabella and Francesca drawing a bunch of bird faces :’) Hmmm…where’d they get that inspiration??? :):):)
I started to get pretty good at identifying faces in everything, like blotches on a watercolored canvas, or within other faces. The next few are paintings from the summer.
These next two paintings I never finished because I had #angst. That angst is something I’ve been trying to explain in a post for the last month but it isn’t rly coming together cause I’m still angsty and can’t really explain how to combat it completely ya know. When I say angst I mean internal resistance to my own creative self. But tbh I was really happy with the second painting while it was happening. I just lost the flow somehow…. ??
Funny side note: my brother Kyle used this piece in a short film as a “masterpiece” for an artist who never believed in himself until someone stole his painting (this one) and it ended up in a museum. To do the film, he finished it with paper and glued it on. When the film ended, he took off the paper and my painting remained unfinished all summer and still is in this state ahaha!
~also, the coloring of the first face on the left took me 4ever
Now that I think about it, I think I couldn’t figure out what color to use because I had gone with too static of a color pallet rather than a smooth blend. See the clear contrast from purple to blue. You can see I was trying to blend it but then got lazy. I was thinking much too hard.
This one below reminds me of the City of Berkeley sign ! I tried to remake this and never felt like it was a finished product but now I’m looking at it and I’m rly vibin with it!
This Etch-a-Sketch I made looks really similar to the faces above hah. he says “HI” haha
Doodlin on the notes on my phone when I discovered the art part ! This was the icon for my art insta for a while. It originally was @zzoodlezz but idk now don’t ask I’m angsty.
My friend asked me to make an album cover for his song and I ended up drawing something that looked like him. Sound waves are ft. here again.
And on the same day I drew this:
In this next drawing I really love the guy in the middle of this one with the earrings. I’ve never drawn anything like him before. Also, some interesting thoughts I was writing, eh?
haha I especially like “What the fuck is a thought”
Now, in these doodles I really like the ones on the right that share an eye in saying What’s up? How Are You? So freakyyy 😀
Annnndd, now for the close ups! Other than the one below, most of them have either sad or creepy eyes cause I’m angsty.
Oil pastel with Che at Strada:
^ don’t worry, I dropped that class. I like the little people hanging from the earrings.
This one has storm cloud brains and eyes:
I LOVE THIS GUY BELOW! He’s SO funny I have no idea where he came from. And the flower and the clock! Ugh ❤ I wanna use him for some kind of comic ?
These lil rain drop faces are fun 😛
I rly like this one below. Mainly cause it’s purple and the middle face’s nose is awesome.
hmmmmm….can u see what I see in this one?
To reassure you that I am not completely creepy, here are some gentle, warm faces!
~sleepy sleep~~ as the eyebrows. I made that one into a sticker/notebook/mug here on RedBubble! ❤ These ones below involve my favorite things (da sun, da moon)
the drawing above with the girl in the sun pulling the planets is a lot like a painting I made for Amelia. You can see it in the post with my poem called dear all women,
OMNOMNOM! Annapurna loves that one hahah.
I love that piece^^^, especially for what I wrote next to it! Sun n mun baby
I actually did this doodle when I was in a very bad place and my bff was consoling me. I was doing this mindlessly, so I didn’t realize till after that the left leg might have represented me and the right leg was him, with love and warmth in his eyes. ❤
And here are some pre-2017-ers when I was doing much more realism, or surrealism in the realm of realistic looking art.
To wrap up I wanted to show a drawing that really represents what the kids call FLOW.
This came at a very angsty time (late July) when there was so much art in me and nothing was coming out. Art constipation? Mm hmm. Then one fateful morning I just
let it out.
I started by drawing the little dude on my mechanical pencil. I flowed in so many different directions, more and more randomness progressing out of me. The little dude grew into eyeball head men and the word BIC turned into BYE. The eyeball men turned into Ferb and Bye started melting. If you look closely at the outline of the letters, “B” models the shape of Ferb’s head, “Y” is the shape of a face that turns into a green monkey man with lips, and “E” grows a tongue and then turns into a purple dude with brain, eye, and tongue balloons! hehehe. It ends with two huge heads: the green monkey man with a brain and the creepy purple dude with bulging eyes. Sexy right?
I started crying of excitement after making this because it was the first time in weeks that I felt like a kid again with my art. My imagination just FLEW! And it’s so creepy and weird!!! hahahah. I wasn’t sure what to do with this piece because when it stands alone it’s really funky but maybe one day I’ll make a little eye-spy book or something where you have to follow the progression of drawings and focus on details rather than the whole thing at once. I think a huge part of this piece is it’s process.
To me, process is everythang.
Thank you for reading all of that! !!!! Welcome to my imagination 🙂
Just doing this post has given me much more appreciation for myself and my freaky brain. Like most, I really struggle with simply believing in myself and feeling like what I’m doing is worth anything. But in compiling this I got to appreciate my creative growth and skill. I really do like what I do and I know if I put my heart on paper I can really make some wild thangs. I’ll keep updating you as I flow through this journey 🙂 :):):):)
❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ !!!!!!!!!
with much much much love n peace,
